Podcasting

As a researcher I spend a large amount of time writing. Often in the form of academic papers, but also reports, blogs, pamphlets to share with participants, and all other kinds of documents. I have also always been a really avid reader. Yet, I have a particular fascination for oral story-telling. Podcasts, in many ways, seem to me the increasingly popular cousin of the old-fashioned story-telling. I listen to many podcasts in my spare time and I generally love the radio. Thanks to the British Science Media Fellowship Scheme and UCL Engineering, in 2019 I was able to spend time at the BBC Radio Science and learn more about how podcast are scripted, hosted and produced.

In 2019 I have been featured in the episode “Latests in Disability Tech” of Digital Planed – BBC World Service

In 2020 I have also spoke about my research during the episode “Levelling the playing field” by the Made At UCL Podcast

In 2021 I developed, hosted and produced the five-episode series Innovation Action Insights for the Innovation Action collaborative initiative funded by UK aid.

In 2022 I had the pleasure to speak with Paul & William at Litteral Humans during an episode on Disability and accessibility on their podcast series “Tech Can’t Save Us”. During out conversation we touched on everything from accessible sex toys to my most recent Artistic Technologies Project.

Many of the innovations which shape our lives and the world we live in are developed by designers and engineers working behind closed doors. But what happens when researchers and innovators work together to develop open-source solutions to address some of the greatest challenges of our time? Hosted and produced by Dr Giulia Barbareschi and with a technical commentary by Dr Ben Oldfrey, Innovation Action Insights features interviews and stories from the brains behind the disruptive and cutting-edge innovations aiming to impact the lives of millions of people living in different areas of the world.

Funded by UK Aid COVIDAction and AT2030 through the Innovation Action collaborative initiative led by the Global Disability Innovation Hub. The podcast is supported by UCL Engineering, GDI Hub, UCL Institute of Healthcare Engineering, Institute of Making, Frontier Technologies Hub, University of Nairobi and the ALL Institute.
