Hiring PhD Student in Inclusive Communication Technologies

The Inclusive Technology and Collective Engagement Group seeks a PhD researcher to work on the development of novel technologies to support individuals with communication disabilities. Our group takes a collaborative participatory approach, seeking to engage users, their families, and other relevant stakeholders to help ensure that technologies fit the needs of the individual, their socio-technical contexts, thus promoting meaningful impact in their daily lives.

We are looking for a PhD researcher to investigate how AI and other emerging technologies can be leveraged to create new applications and devices that can assist those who face barriers as a result of medical conditions causing impaired speech, as well as other disabilities which might affect verbal or non-verbal communication. This could involve: (1) assessing gaps in how mainstream agentic speech technologies fail to account for the needs of disabled users; (2) conducting empirical research on available Augmentative and Alternative Communication, voice banking, or automatic speech recognition technologies in different context to identify opportunities for innovation; (3) engage in co-design of new digital applications or physical tools that can help people express themselves and be understood on their own terms in a variety of life situations. You will join a supportive interdisciplinary research environment, have opportunity to engage in collaborative research with partners across the Global North and Global South, ultimately contributing to address real-world challenges for individuals with communication disabilities, their families, and society at large.
